           Our Circle of Compassion

Our Circle of Compassion for SATB voices and piano
The words are by Albert Einstein from a letter that he wrote to a friend,
Robert S.Marcus in 1950.  The words have been altered slightly to change it
from third person to first person plural.

Human beings are a part of the whole universe.
A part limited in time and space.
We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -
A kind of optical delusion of our consciousness.
This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires
And to affection for a few persons nearest to us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison, by widening our circle of compassion,
To embrace all creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
play sound (not a recording, but an electronic version of the piece - just to get an idea of the sound)
